Wouldn’t it be so much easier to exercise if you could do it WITH your toddlers? I talk to so many moms who WANT to exercise, but their kids are standing in their way, sometimes literally! Some say they are going to get up earlier, but sleep is SO important during this stage! Others say they will do it during nap time, but isn’t there a million things to do during nap time? Finally, there is my all time favorite: exercising when the husband gets home! Yeah right, I’m exhausted and done with the day by then! So what if you could just exercise WITH your toddlers?
Now I know what you are thinking, how in the world am I going to get my one, two, maybe even three toddlers to exercise with me? No way, not my children! I promise it’s going to work, just stay with me! I am going to make this super fun for you and your toddler. I am even going to give you some helpful hints on how to do it on your own, if that is what you need. Let’s face it, sometimes exercising by yourself is the only time you get AWAY from your toddler! So I am going to help with that as well!
Exercise is Important
Exercising is super-duper important for everyone, but especially important for moms. As moms we tend to give a lot of attention to the kids, the husband, the cleaning, the grocery shopping, the laundry (my least favorite job) and the list goes on! We find that we don’t have a lot of time for ourselves. This is how exercise falls to the bottom of our list on things we should be doing. And it should be one of the top things we do each day. It is not just about LOOKING fantastic, but it is about FEELING fantastic. This is where exercise comes in! We need exercise to raise those endorphins and keep our spirit up. We need it to keep our mind clear and our body strong, so we can accomplish all of those things I listed above. It definitely all starts with us! So I have created 3 ways to exercise WITH our toddlers!
- YOGA: I am just going to dive right in to my personal fave Cosmic Kids. I LOVE some yoga, and this kid online yoga program I have found is AMAZING! It not only has yoga, but it also has lots of interactive lessons as well. It is the perfect teaching tool for your toddler to learn more about the importance of exercise and yoga specifically! Cosmic Kids also has a YouTube channel, books, DVDs, and a teaching program for anyone interested in teaching kids yoga. You just go to their website on your Smart TV or set up your computer, laptop, or tablet. Our favorite video is one that you do while channeling your inner Elsa and doing yoga to the famous “Let it Go”, the song from Frozen! My girls are OBSESSED, and it is seriously super cute! You can also do yoga with Calypso the Flamingo, Alice in Wonderland, and Colonel Crockles the Crocodile! I seriously could just do a whole post on this one website, so just go there! You can thank me later on the comment section! Now if you aren’t feeling Elsa at the moment, go set up your yoga mat in the other room. Your kids will be so enthralled with their workout, they won’t even notice that you are in the other room doing a free adult yoga video on YouTube ALL BY YOURSELF! I promise, Cosmic Kids could entertain them for hours and you get your workout in-WIN WIN!
- OUTSIDE CIRCUITS: My toddlers of course LOVE to be outside! It is also the perfect place to have a circuit training workout. I either go search Pinterest for a workout or usually just make up my own. My workout usually lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. And the girls love doing it with me! They will use water bottles for weights and have their own yoga mat. However, I do have a Plan B if for some strange reason (I wouldn’t know why since toddlers are super predictable) they are not wanting to do a workout of mine that day. I will create STATIONS. I usually have 4-5 stations and will set a timer for each one, and toddlers LOVE a timer! These stations are super easy-hopscotch, basketball, trampoline, balance beam, weights with water bottles, kicking the ball back and forth, tag, bikes, scooters, throwing the frisbee, bean bags or cornhole boards, horseshoes, or anything that will get them active! You can create new stations each week. If you had 5 stations and set the timer for 6 minutes per station, there is your 30 minutes of exercise that day! Now if you just don’t have the time or the patience for stations, I have an alternative. An easy way to exercise BY YOURSELF is bringing out the paint, the sidewalk chalk, the bubbles, or the play dough. Then you have a workout all to yourself!
- DANCE: What toddler doesn’t love a dance party? And come on mom, sometimes you just need to dance it out! Not only is it a perfect form of stress relief, but it is such a strong cardio workout! We LOVE to set up YouTube, Spotify, or Pandora to fun Disney songs, Kidz Bop, or our favorite Patty Shukla. Patty does tons of kid songs while playing her guitar. My kids are OBSESSED with the “Freeze” song! She also has a YouTube channel, DVDs, CDs, educational resources, and she even has a tour (I know you are super excited about this one). You can just pop up her website or go to her YouTube channel and the kids are dancing that energy right out! Again, if you are not channeled into your inner Patty, then I have an alternative. Your toddlers will be having such a blast dancing, they will not even notice you sneaking out of the room. This is the part where you can pull up Pinterest and do that 45 minute arm and ab workout you have been wanting (or maybe we will just say NEEDING) to do. Another WIN WIN!
Now moms, I know you can do this! I know your kids will love it as much as mine. Exercise is so important for you AND your kids! Get them in the habit early! Lead by example! Make it a priority for your family! Make the commitment to do it 2-3 days a week and see how you feel after 4 weeks. I bet you feel better and really bet that your kids want more! Leave a comment of some of your favorite ways to stay active WITH your toddlers. I am always looking for new ways to implement more activities for us!
