It is time to get organized! Kids are going back to school, you keep losing your keys, members of your family have no idea when it’s their turn to go to the dentist, important mail is getting lost, you have no idea what to cook this week, and the list goes on! This happens all the time to so many families, including mine. Life is crazy busy, and if I am not organized, I’m LOST! That is why I HAD to create a family command center for our home!
Console Table or Desk
First, you need to think about the location. I would suggest you put it somewhere close to the kitchen. This is the room that families tend to be in the most. I knew I wanted my command center right off the kitchen, which was a small space. This is why I chose to find a console table that was thin in width. However, if you have a bigger space and find that a desk works better for you, go for it! For me, I knew I wanted some shelves down below for baskets. That is another reason I chose a console table. I also knew I wanted a shade of white, since white seems to brighten up everything! My kitchen has dark wooden cabinets (which my husband is painting soon and really doesn’t want to, but he is doing it anyway), so I knew I needed white!
Of course, everyone needs a calendar. This one is a no brainer! I like to get one that is hanging, so everyone in my family can see it and it doesn’t get lost. I like to get a dry erase calendar, but the chalkboard ones are super cute as well! The calendar helps with important dates, but I also like to write on post-its and post them on the calendar. I will find some extra space, write “Go to the Zoo” on a post-it and stick it on the extra space. When we actually do that activity, I take it off. You can do that with anything: goals, new places to eat, play dates you want to have that month, or potential date nights. POST-ITS ARE EVERYTHING!
You definitely need this one. I like one that requires pins. To me, it is way easier than the ribbon ones, but you can use those as well. My board holds our ongoing grocery list, any gift certificates or coupons, and any schedules for our girls. You can always use this one for any school letters, school projects, spelling words, teacher newsletters, sports schedules, dance classes, and anything else that is important for your family.
Next, I really think you need a wall shelf. There is never enough room, never ever! With a wall shelf, you are automatically building more room. I LOVE my shelf, seriously LOVE it! First, I have his and her bowls. Now these bowls are super important. My husband tends to lose things every now and then. Not with his bowl! When he comes home, he can just drop everything in his bowl: keys, wallet, headphones, sunglasses, spare change (this is so annoying lying around the house, especially with littles), anything he carries in his pockets. I use my bowl for the same thing! Yes, you are going to thank me later! THESE BOWLS HOLD OUR LIVES! I also keep a cute box for my post-its. Finally, I keep a piece of pottery (created by my talented, artist brother-in-law) that holds my pens and scissors. The wall shelf is a must! Go get a shelf!
Small Filing Compartment
Now, let’s move on to what is on the desk. I think the most important piece on my desk is my wooden filing compartment. This holds my bills, papers I need to file, checkbook, and meal planner. I love that it has many compartments, so I can have a set place for all things paper. You, of course, could use this for many different things: homework, journals, stationary, or anything related to paper.
This is why I HAD to have a console table with shelves! I am obsessed with baskets. They are a perfect way to hide the junk I don’t want to see. This brings me to my BIG issue with electronics and all of their cords and chargers being out! We have 2 cell phones, 2 tablets, 1 laptop, 1 Fitbit, 1 smart watch, and 1 wi-fi thing, which I don’t know the name. All of these things have to be plugged into chargers. Seeing cords everywhere drives me bonkers! Enter in a cute basket. I actually purchased 2 matching baskets with open handles on each side. I put all of the electronics in the basket and slide the cords through the handles. Now you can see nothing but a beautiful basket! GAME CHANGER!
The other basket I use for my girls’ bows, ribbons, pony tail holders, and brushes. I need a basket for all of this, because we are insane over here about bows and ribbons. GIRL MOM ISSUES! However, you can use your basket to suit your family’s needs: sports accessories, baby or toddler toys, camera and accessories, bibs, folders, or anything that needs a new home.
I always need 1-2 drawers in my table for art supplies. I keep this area pretty simple. I have a small notebook, extra post-its, hole puncher, pins for my bulletin board, and a flash drive. If you tend to junk up drawers, because it can happen quickly, I would get some of the clear drawer organizers to keep this from happening.
Finally, I like my areas to look cute and styled (who doesn’t, right?). This last shelf is where I add my recipe books and a picture frame. My recipe books are perfect here, and my picture frame makes it look and feel like home. I also keep my 2 fave recipe books (Whole 30 and Meals Made Simple) on top of my desk. I use them so much when meal planning for my family. The last thing I would recommend would be some flowers. Flowers brighten up any area! You don’t necessarily need fresh flowers each week. I LOVE to dry out my flowers and stick them in little vases all over the house – hydrangeas are so good for this!

This is everything you need to get organized and create your own family command center. I promise, you will LOVE it after you do it! Your life will become less chaotic and feel a little more balanced! And we all could use some balance in our lives, right? Please drop me a comment and let me know what is in your command center! I always like to hear other ideas from friends!
